Three Dog Memorial Walkathon for 2012 is set! The date has been established - October 20, 2012, which is a Saturday, and should be cooler than last year. October just happens to be "Adopt a Shelter Dog" month. How fortuitous for us.
As with last year, this is not a dog walk, but a walk in memory of lost souls. However, since it will be cool in October, dogs that are socialized and well behaved are welcome (with their poop bags in paw).
The venue for Newport is changing to a much more fun one. The Beaufort and Morehead City venues will stay the same. We are adding Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach this year! If you want to get your feet in the sand, Atlantic Beach is your venue.
This is not a race, but feel free to run as fast as you want, or stroll as slowly as you wish. All triathletes participating in the Emerald Isle event are automatically qualified to use the 5k run as your 12 steps.
Visit this site for frequent updates, start amassing your sponsors, and put October 20 on your calendar in ink!

WELCOME! This website was created to initiate a 12-step program to improve the conditions of our Carteret County Animal Shelter and the animals temporarily staying there. The 12 steps will be fun and healthy. Come and walk with us for the animals!
October is “Adopt a shelter dog” Month. How should we celebrate? Perhaps we can walk 3 miles to raise money for the homeless pets of all species in the Carteret County Shelter.

Walk to save and improve the lives of the animals at the Carteret County Humane Society. This event will give you an opportunity to commune while you walk to raise funds for a much needed cause. We hope you will enjoy the walk, and feel good about the contribution you are making.
The CCHS is a very low kill shelter, and we in this county are incredibly lucky to have that. However, the facility is in desperate need of upgrade and maintenance. In general, our shelter's necessary expenses are approximately 76% greater than that budgeted by the county. That amounts to 43% of their entire expenses coming from donations.
Our shelters are overflowing, and many of those abandoned and confiscated are un- vaccinated. Hence, shelters all over the country are dealing with parvo, distemper, bordatella, mange, etc. Rescue facilities are filled beyond capacity, so often government funded shelters are the only option. We owe it to our loyal non-human partners to give them the best chance possible. When the best is our local animal shelter, it needs to be a real shelter - a place of temporary respite that is safe, clean, healthy, and the animals are protected until loving homes are found. Unfortunately, like anything else, this takes money.
SOooooo, why not take a walk, and let your friends and family contribute a small amount per quarter mile? Our event is a 12-step program for the all species of animals in the county. Three miles, twelve steps - one per quarter mile, each sponsored, and the animals benefit. Register today, start amassing sponsors, and come walk with us on October 20, 2012. Begin the walk anytime between 9 and 11 AM, whichever is most convenient for you.

Sponsors? Maybe just $3/step. Most of us can afford a $36 donation, which is what a $3/step commitment would be. And then there are local businesses who would love to be involved in a tax deductible good cause. They can commit to a little more per step. And corporations - they can use the good PR, and the tax deduction. If you put a little work into it, you can get many sponsors, making a large check for the animals. This is the "fundraising" part of the event. Before you know it, you can have a full page or more of sponsors, and the shelter will receive a nice donation simply because you took a walk.
Onsite registration is available, but we prefer to know in advance.

Make your Final Donations HERE (all checks should be made to PHP/CCHS, or simply use PayPal with the address of cchsprotectors@yahoo.com)
Orphan Sponsorship HERE (if you wish to sponsor a walker, and do not know one, you may sign up to be an orphan sponsor. In that case, you name the venue and amount per step, and Three Dog will pair you with a walker who has little or no sponsors!)
For your convenience, all forms are available at the Carteret County Humane Society Animal Shelter, 853 Hibbs Road, Newport. As well, brochures are available at all local veterinary facilities and most local businesses.
